Snoring is usually treated as a joke until it is not — until a partner is sleeping in another room, until daytime fatigue becomes a safety issue, until a relationship starts to fray around it. The available options have historically been unappealing: oral appliances that must be worn nightly, CPAP for those with apnea, or surgical palatal procedures with meaningful pain and recovery. NightLase® offers a genuinely different approach, and it is one of the more quietly transformative treatments we perform in Encino.
Why People Snore
During sleep, the muscles of the pharynx relax. In a partially narrowed airway, inspired air moves faster through the constriction and causes the soft tissues — chiefly the soft palate and uvula — to vibrate. That vibration is the sound. Contributing factors include excess weight, alcohol before bed, nasal obstruction, supine sleeping position, age-related tissue laxity, and simple anatomic variation in palate length and airway dimension.
How NightLase Works
NightLase uses the Er:YAG laser in a non-ablative, thermal-only mode delivered through the open mouth to the soft palate and surrounding oropharyngeal mucosa. Gentle, controlled heating causes immediate contraction of existing collagen and, more importantly, initiates a collagen remodeling response in the submucosa over the following weeks. The tissue becomes measurably tighter and less floppy, which reduces vibration amplitude and, in many patients, modestly increases airway patency.
Nothing is cut. No tissue is removed. There is no incision, no suture, no anesthesia beyond occasional topical, and no appliance to wear afterward.
The Protocol
- Three sessions, spaced approximately three weeks apart.
- Each session takes fifteen to twenty-five minutes.
- The sensation is warmth at the back of the throat; most patients tolerate it easily without numbing.
- You return to normal activity and eating immediately — mild throat dryness or scratchiness for a day is the typical extent of it.
- Partners often report improvement after the first or second session, with the full effect at six to eight weeks after the third.
- Results generally last twelve to eighteen months, and a single maintenance session annually is usually sufficient.
What The Evidence Shows
Published studies of Er:YAG palatal treatment report meaningful reductions in snoring intensity and duration in the majority of treated patients, with high partner-reported satisfaction and an excellent safety profile. We present this honestly: NightLase is well supported as a snoring treatment. It is not a validated primary treatment for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea, and it should not be used to replace CPAP in patients who need it.
The Sleep Apnea Question
Snoring can be benign, or it can be the audible sign of obstructive sleep apnea — a condition associated with hypertension, arrhythmia, stroke, insulin resistance and daytime impairment. Before treating anyone, we screen: witnessed pauses in breathing, gasping arousals, morning headaches, unrefreshing sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, neck circumference and BMI. Patients with red flags are referred for a formal sleep study before we proceed. If apnea is diagnosed, treating it takes priority; NightLase may still have a role for residual snoring, but only alongside proper management.
We would rather send a patient for a sleep study and lose the sale than treat the sound and miss the disease.
Who Is A Good Candidate
The ideal NightLase patient snores primarily from palatal vibration, has been screened for or already excluded significant sleep apnea, and wants a non-surgical option without a nightly device. Patients whose snoring stems predominantly from nasal obstruction, severe tonsillar hypertrophy or substantial obesity will see less benefit from palatal treatment alone, and we say so before beginning a series. Weight management, positional therapy and reducing evening alcohol remain genuinely effective adjuncts that we discuss with every patient.
Omnia Wellness Center is one of the few practices in Encino and the San Fernando Valley offering NightLase on a Fotona platform. Consultations include screening, candidacy assessment, and a frank discussion of expected benefit — and if we think a sleep physician should see you first, that is what we will tell you.
