  • Oral vitamin C absorption is saturated by intestinal SVCT1 transporters at roughly 200 mg per dose, capping plasma levels near 80 μmol/L. Intravenous administration bypasses this ceiling, achieving plasma concentrations 30–70× higher — a range with distinct pharmacologic activity.
  • At millimolar plasma levels, ascorbate acts as a pro-oxidant in the extracellular space, generating hydrogen peroxide that selectively stresses damaged and pathogenic cells while leaving healthy cells (which contain catalase) untouched.
  • Vitamin C is also a required cofactor for collagen hydroxylation, carnitine synthesis, and the recycling of vitamin E and glutathione — placing it at the center of tissue repair and antioxidant defense.
